This class explores body and spacial awareness, movement, rhythm, and improvisation. Lyrical dance combines the grace of ballet with the stylization of jazz to create a form of dance that allows students to express emotion through movement. With the foundation of this style being ballet and jazz, it is encouraged that dancers are also enrolled in those classes.
Guided by an instructor, dancers will be given prompts and cues to inspire their improvisational skills. They are encouraged to let go of any preconceived notions of dance and to simply move freely in the space. Students are taught to listen to their bodies, embrace mistakes, and find new and unique ways to express themselves through movement.
In addition to improvisation, students also learn the principles of composition. They are guided through different techniques for creating structured dance pieces, including exploring concepts such as rhythm, dynamics, space, and form. Students are encouraged to experiment with different ways of organizing movements and to collaborate with their classmates in creating group compositions.
